Operating principle of chiller system

The chiller system cools by using an absorption or compression cycle to create a refrigerant solution, which is then transmitted throughout the ducting system, cooling the air through the chillers. The principle of operation of the chiller system is based on the refrigeration cycle using refrigerant. Here is the detailed principle:
Steam absorption cycle:
  • The refrigerant in the chiller absorbs heat from cooling water (condensed water)
  • This absorption process causes the refrigerant to evaporate, becoming hot steam.
  • The heat is sent to the cooling tower to be cooled by ambient air.
  • After cooling, the condensed vapor returns to liquid at high pressure.
  • This fluid is pressurized by a chiller valve to produce extremely low cold temperatures.
  • This cold liquid will absorb heat from the cooling water in the evaporator starting a new cycle.
Steam compression cycle:
  • Refrigerant in compressed air increases the pressure to increase the temperature by the compressor
  • The heat passes through the condenser into the environment, condensing into a liquid.
  • Fluid passing through the pressure relief valve reduces the temperature to cold liquid
  • The cold liquid absorbs the heat in the evaporator from the cooling water, becoming hot steam.
  • This heat is sucked in by the compressor to start the next cycle.
In both cycles, cooling water acts as heat transfer and is recirculated throughout the ductwork system to cool the air for the entire building. Cooling tower helps regenerate refrigerant for the cycle to continue.
The steps in the cycle are automatically controlled by the sensor system, valves and controllers to maintain the desired cooling temperature. This operating principle helps the chiller system cool large, efficiently while saving energy.
